Abstract
As the world moves into more expensive and denser modes of living, there is a movement towards looking to free accessible public space to operate in a way which is holistic to the needs of the population. This article investigates how the idea of technology can be applied to the sport of bouldering to create holistic outcomes in an urban framework. This article investigates the relationship between technology and sport for public space with an overview of precedents for urban bouldering from around the world. It then looks at the removal of technology from climbing and the shift to bouldering. This is followed by looking at the design intent for the Brunswick Bouldering Wall as a test case of how bouldering can be holistically integrated into the urban realm. The article finishes with a propositional look at where urban bouldering could be heading as the sport becomes even more integrated with the urban realm.
