Abstract

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare but progressive condition that affects 1 in 1 million of the population. It is characterized by the excessive production of mucus within the abdominal and pelvic cavity, which left unchecked can have fatal consequences. Of those diagnosed with the condition a percentage will require a stoma. In this article, Carole Swash discusses how therapeutic support is achieved through holistic stoma care nursing during periods of active disease. In a case study, she explores the therapeutic role provided by the stoma care nurse (SCN) in dealing with the holistic needs of a patient with PMP.
