Abstract

This paper discusses the use of two systems to enhance railroad safety. Traffic Management Systems (TMS) provide centralized data to the railroad infrastructure manager. Optimized Automatic Train Operation (ATO) minimizes the loss of efficiency that is sometimes apparent when the train is manually operated. It is an on-board system. The paper provides information on the benefits of using both systems conjointly. It tries to bridge the gap between ATO and TMS, to combine the knowledge from both the train side and the infrastructure side.
