Holiness is a central concept in the religious traditions of the world, as well as in academic theology and religious studies, but it is surprisingly absent from standard discussions in philosophy of religion. This entry presents the religious roots of holiness, surveys the philosophical discussion from Kant to Otto, considers more recent contributions from phenomenological and analytic philosophers, and concludes with the idea of human holiness as evidence for God. While the emphasis is on Judaism and Christianity, given their influence on Western philosophy of religion, the general cross‐religious significance of holiness is considered as well.
