Abstract

The ground-state properties of the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model are studied in the strong-coupling limit for finite clusters up to 20 sites with various numbers of holes. The one-hole system can be described by a quasiparticle picture at not too large interaction energies, while for two holes a negative binding energy is found. For a larger concentration of holes no indication of a phase separation exists.
