Abstract

Strong independent audit, inspection and scrutiny play a vital part in democratic systems of government. These functions will become increasingly important during straitened fiscal conditions, with additional pressures on audit bodies and the public sector organisations within their purview. What follows is a report of a meeting organised by the Scottish Policy Innovation Forum in partnership with the Scottish Public Management Network exploring issues pertaining to audit, inspection, accountability and austerity. This meeting was held in the Royal Society of Edinburgh on 21 January 2011 and was chaired by Professor Michael Keating, Professor of Politics at the University of Aberdeen and a founding member of the Scottish Policy Innovation Forum.
