Abstract

As one of the leading figures of the Servet-i Funun literary current and Turkish Modern Literature in general Hâlid Ziyâ Usakligil had been very active not only in diverse literary fields as an author of novels, novellas, memoirs, drama, poems in prose, history of Literature but also in the fields of pedagogy, chemistry and mathematics. He was a positivist-minded late Ottoman gentleman and this had effects both on his literary style and esthetical approach. Moreover his interest in natural and logical sciences made him write apart from his literary works some other published texts regarding to sciences in general. One of these latter type of works is his Hesap Oyunlari about arithmetic. In this study, we reintroduce this opuscule and analyse some of the arithmetical problems contained in it in order to contextualize his interest in sciences. A new rendering of this text is given as an appendix to the article.
