Abstract

Patients who are candidates for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) must be HLA typed to find the best donor. It is important for the nursing staff of a HSCT unit to understand HLA and how the recipient is matched to the donor. St. Jude has incorporated haploidentical donor transplantations into their HSCT program. Knowledge of the recipient and donor HLA match can be beneficial for the nursing regarding potential complications during tranpslant and issues revolving around engraftment.
