Abstract
Although the associations between HLA antigens and various diseases are well established and have repeatedly been confirmed, the mechanisms of these associations have remained elusive. It is likely that the specific epitopes and, in some cases, even the molecules directly responsible for the associations with specific diseases are still unknown. Some of the recent developments in our understanding of the HLA-D region will be discussed.
