Abstract

Recommendations for using bumblebees for pollination areexpressed as the number of hives or workers per unit area. Ingreenhouses, however, growers consider only the age ofbumblebee colonies when managing the number of pollinators. They consider an 8-week-old colony as optimal and an 11-week-old colony as too old and inefficient. However, this parameter isnot reliable. Whereas the number of workers in young colonies(4 weeks old) is generally well estimated by directly observing thebees within the hive, future projections of the worker populationare uncertain because of the variability of the colony growth rate(Beekman, 1998; Alaux, 2001; Goulson
