Abstract

Abstract After a brief account of the emergence of AIDS, this chapter will discuss in detail the great scientific controversy surrounding the discovery of HIV. The rivalry between Gallo and Montagnier is described in the context of science. Then, the discovery of the first AIDS drug, AZT, will be reviewed, followed by other nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Subsequently, HIV protease inhibitors, HIV integrase inhibitors, and HIV entry inhibitors are reviewed from both scientific and human aspects.
