Abstract

About 1 in 6 persons with AIDS has a malignant neoplasm1 and these not infrequently affect the oral tissues.2-4 The most common malignant tumours in HIV disease are Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS: sometimes termed epidemic KS or EKS), which currently affects up to 40% of those with AIDS; and lymphomas, which affect up to 10% or more.596 In children with HIV, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma may be the more frequent tumour.7 With an expected annual increase in the USA of up to about 8000 cases of Kaposi’s sarcoma and up to about 3000 cases of lymphomas related to HIV disease’ malignant neoplasms are an increasingly important aspect of HIV disease and AIDS.
