Abstract
A subtype of HIV that spreads more easily in heterosexual than homosexual men or injecting drug misusers may explain different patterns of transmission of the disease worldwide. In Thailand, India, and sub-Saharan Africa about 90% of HIV-1 infections are acquired through heterosexual contact compared with 10% in the US and western Europe.
