Abstract

The purpose of this review is to summarize the current status of known natural infections with SIV, the pathogenic potential of SIV in natural and unnaturual hosts, the genetic diversity of SIV, and possible monkey origins for HIV. In addition, we discuss the importance of SIV for studying the pathogenesis of AIDS and strategies for therapeutic and vaccine intervention
