Abstract
Currently only a small portion of those in Britain infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are female, but the incidence of infection among women is rising and many are of childbearing age (Chin 1988). Inevitably an increasing number of women will present in pregnancy with known HIV infection or will request HIV antibody testing which subsequently proves positive. Midwives must acquire the knowledge and skills to give care which is sensitive to and protects the interests of these women.
