Abstract
The impact of HIV/AIDS on Zimbabwe's population has not been as severe as that predicted by mathematical models in the 1980s, say researchers. In a new study, Simon Gregson and colleagues (Imperial College, London, UK) show that HIV prevalence has begun to decline and mortality may be levelling off now in Zimbabwe. “The demographic impact of HIV has been extremely severe—for example, the death rate has trebled and a quarter of children are now orphans in the worst-affected areas—but the rate of natural population increase remains positive”, Gregson told TLID.
