Abstract

Women with known HIV infection who may have deferred child-bearing because of their serostatus are now reconsidering their reproductive options, because of the promise of new therapies which both improve their own health and reduce the risk of vertical transmission (Beckerman, 1998). In addition, it is hoped that more women will be diagnosed during pregnancy as HIV testing is now to be offered and recommended to all women along with other routine blood tests during pregnancy (Department of Health, 1999). By developing their professional knowledge and understanding, midwives will be more prepared to enable HIV-infected women to make informed decisions about their lives, either preconceptually or during pregnancy. This article aims to provide up-to-date factual information regarding HIV-related women's health and childbearing issues.
