Abstract

Estimates from the international conference on AIDS show HIV transmission rates in some parts of south and southeast Asia to currently be as high as they were a decade ago in sub-Saharan Africa. In fact transmission rates may soon exceed those previously reported in sub-Saharan Africa. Some areas in Thailand China Burma and northeast India have recently experienced rapid increases in HIV seroprevalence while seroprevalence is also on the rise in Hong Kong Singapore Taiwan and Japan. This report summarizes county findings from the conference. Seroprevalence clinical presentation viral topology and interactions and risk behavior are discussed for Thailand and India. Less extensive information is offered on China Burma Singapore Hong Kong Japan Taiwan Indonesia the Philippines and Malaysia. While incidence and prevalence of HIV infection vary widely across Asia nearly all countries reported an increasing number of diagnoses due to heterosexual contact. To combat these trends preventive initiatives and better epidemiologic surveillance are urgently needed.
