Abstract
The Aberdeen Area Indian Health Service (AAIHS) has recognized the potential of HIV transmission through piercing of the skin and flesh offerings that occur during the Sun Dance ceremony. Since 1988 AAIHS has sponsored educational projects to reduce the risk of HIV transmission occurring at this ceremony. Training has been provided in a sensitive manner, respectful of the sacredness of this ceremony and the history of religious repression. Lakota and Dakota speakers have assisted in facilitating the trainings and community outreach that occurred in the summers of 1988 and 1992–1996.
