Abstract

Illiteracy rates were consistently high in Madeira until the second half of the 20th century, even more so than in mainland Portugal. This phenomenon was associated with the slow and uneven socioeconomic development of the different communities throughout the island. The offer and frequency of schooling was also equally irregular. The construction of historical meaning aiming to understand the relationship between society and schooling in Madeira can be achieved comparing the data on schooling and literacy. The statistical observation presented in this paper is the evolution of primary schooling in Madeira, comparing data related to the islands and data related to the whole of Portugal.
