Abstract

AbstractThis chapter traces the beginnings of the Internet, focusing on key personalities and technological developments. The history follows the origin of the original ARPANET, including development of TCP/IP protocols, through the emergence of the NSFNET backbone and the development of the World Wide Web. Focus is also placed on the process of discovery, facilitated by open cooperation among scientists through Requests for Comments and the dedication to create a flexible, open‐architecture environment.
