Abstract
In 1992, Kaiser first devoted attention to “regenerative medicine” stating that “A new branch of medicine will develop that attempts to change the course of chronic disease and in many instances will regenerate tired and failing organ systems.” The author discusses the state of the art in regenerative medicine in terms of historical steps, strategies, and societal issues.
