Abstract

Recently, we have read with great interest Denegri and colleagues' article [ [1] Denegri A. Magnani G. Kraler S. Bruno F. Klingenberg R. Mach F. Gencer B. Räber L. Rodondi N. Rossi V.A. Matter C.M. Nanchen D. Obeid S. Lüscher T.F. History of peripheral artery disease and cardiovascular risk of real-world patients with acute coronary syndrome: role of inflammation and comorbidities. Int. J. In their study, Denegri et al elucidated that in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), history of peripheral artery disease (PAD) is an independent marker of a very high risk (VHR) of cardiovascular disease. Despite that PAD was previously proven as predictor of MACE, PAD-patients received fewer secondary prevention prescriptions at discharge. This trail showed that PAD was associated with increased and persistent inflammation, higher risk for major cardiovascular events (MACE). Thereby, the history of PAD may serve as an independent predictor to pinpoint ACS patients at VHR who need more aggressive secondary prevention in addition to traditional cardiovascular risk factors.
