Abstract

The AGU Committee on History of Geophysics (CHG), chaired by David P. Stern, met at the AGU Fall Meeting on December 3, 1984. The CHG is presently concentrating on three principal tasks: solicitation and coordination of history‐related talks at AGU meetings, publication of historical material in Eos, and the continued publication of its Newsletter. Several committee members expressed the need to preserve in writing important early events which lead to significant advances in various fields of geophysics. It was pointed out that many of these events are anecdotal and thus easily lost to future generations. The Newsletter, which is presently in its fifth issue, provides one medium for the preservation of geophysical history.
