Abstract
The early, and rapid, development of water power precipitated the electric utility industry. The evolution from individual mills using mechanical drive to "large" electric central stations capable of developing the full available power occurred over a relatively short period around the turn of the twentieth century, and the principles developed at that time are still the basis of hydropower development today.
