Abstract

The development of apparatus for measuring strains and small movements by transduction into electrical signals is traced over the past hundred years. Instruments depending on resistive, capacitive, inductive, piezoelectric, acoustic and photoelectric systems are considered, and the chief contributors to the introduction of different techniques are enumerated.
