Abstract

Abstract Sudan was known to the outside world through the writings of Classical authors. Archaeological explorations in Sudan started in the 18th century with the beginning of European colonial policy. A great deal of archaeological research in Sudan has been of salvage character. This was linked to the construction and heightening of dams at Aswan in Egypt as well as similar projects on the main Nile and its tributaries inside the Sudanese territory. Individual foreign and national missions and important funding from many states/institutions have greatly contributed to the understanding of the country’s history.
