Abstract

This article briefly traces the history of 2‐year postsecondary education in Montana in the special context of Montana's size and sparse population, including Montana's five colleges of technology (part of the Montana University System), its three community colleges, and the seven tribal colleges located on the seven reservations in Montana. The article reports data suggesting that Montana is lacking sufficient opportunities for 2‐year postsecondary options and outlines steps being taken to correct that situation. Attention is given to the theme of workforce development, which has special importance to the 2‐year institutions. The article also summarizes the major issues currently facing 2‐year institutions.
