Abstract

A group model, based on previous work with reminiscence, was designed to facilitate reminiscing among institutionalized elderly. Isolated nursing home residents were particularly encouraged to attend group sessions. The purpose of these sessions was to create a nonthreatening environment in which group members could have a validating experience. Group goals were to enhance the participants' feelings of self-worth, to increase their sense of meaning and personal identify and to establish a closer connection with their previous self-concepts. A description of the group and a discussion regarding its effectiveness are presented.
