Abstract

This paper provides a full and detailed summary of the occurrence of the Ghost Orchid (Epipogium aphyllum Sw.) in England, from its initial discovery in 1854 to the present day. Phenology and frequency of occurrence is covered, along with a description of habitat and other ecological requirements. All known records are listed, along with details of the initial discovery for each. A list of uncorroborated records is included to encourage observers to complete the picture of its occurrence. Details for all extant herbarium specimens are listed. The species’ exact requirements are discussed, along with its potential future occurrence in Britain.
