Abstract

In French-speaking Switzerland there have been three basic strands of research, which developed at different times. In French-speaking Switzerland most of the books used in schools are officially instigated, by a canton or cantons; very few textbooks are produced by private publishing houses. The focus in French-speaking Switzerland is now on production of appropriate materials, and that is what the very latest research is designed to assist. It finally looks beyond, the materials themselves, to teachers' day-to-day classroom practice. To redesign materials, ie provide new tools which match users' needs, while at the same time helping give a boost to mathematics teaching, it is important to assess how learning and teaching materials are really being used, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
