Abstract

The increasing cost of crude oil, concerns about energy security, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and the realization that energy is an essential input for economic growth have resulted in renewed focus on biofuels. In the last decade, their development has been driven by various governments’ policies. Laws and regulations linked to renewable energy were legislated in several countries. Financial supports, tax policies, and the mandatory blending of some biofuels with fossil fuels in transportation sector are the major policies. Thus, the present chapter provides a generalized overview of the history of biofuels production and the global policies related to their development.
