Abstract

Western tradition, inspired by Christian theology from late Antiquity to the 19th century, conceived the general course of history as sacred history: a single sequence of events starting with God’s creation of the world. The moving force of sacred history was the interaction of God with mankind in general and with his chosen people in particular. Within this framework the major event was the advent of Jesus, thus history revolved around his birthday, dated in the pivotal year numbered ‘Zero’.
