Abstract

The Liu Song empire was the first South Chinese state during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period. Although it existed for just 59 years, the Liu Song, with a shift to authoritarian military rule and a rise to power of the “new nobility”, marked the beginning of a new era in Chinese history. Nevertheless, despite its importance, the Liu Song, as well as the period of 3rd to 6th centuries in general, remains relatively unstudied by sinologists. This article is an attempt to consider and briefly describe the main sources about the Liu Song.
