Abstract

Dr. Axel Perneczky was a modern-day pioneer of neuroendoscopy. He developed the concept of “keyhole neurosurgery”, as an evolution of microneurosurgery. Since 1989, he was working on the application of endoscopy in neurosurgery. In June 1993, he organised in Wiesbaden the “First International Congress on Minimally Invasive Techniques in Neurosurgery”, which signalled the beginning of the modern-day neuroendoscopy. He showed equal passion in educating many neurosurgeons in neuroendoscopic techniques. Dr. Perneczky was honoured “Pioneer in Neuroendoscopy” by the International Federation for Neuroendoscopy in absentia at the occasion of the Vth World Congress of Neuroendoscopy, held in Athens in May 2009.
