Abstract

In recent history, both a growing awareness of how scientific and societal uncertainty impacts management decisions and of the intrinsic value of nature have suggested new approaches to forest management, with a growing debate in forest science over the need for a paradigmatic shift from the classic conventional world view, based on determinism, predictability, and output-oriented management, towards a world view that has roots in complex adaptive systems theory and is consistent with a nature-based ethic. A conceptual framework under this context is provided by systemic silviculture. In this discussion, we analyze how this approach can be linked to three fundamental moments of the history of forestry and forest science: the Dauerwald theory, Gurnaud’s control method, and the origins of environmental ethics. Relationships with the recent history of forest management science and current research perspectives are also highlighted.

INTRODUCTION

PRO SILVA is a European federation of foresters who advocate forest management based on principles grounded on the processes found in natural forests. PRO SILVA presents a policy which is based on an holistic approach to sustainability, covering the major issues of major importance to present-day forest management These require a standard of commitment from forest owners and forest managers to the following issues: the basic principles of responsible forest management and forest utilisation, the maintenance of biodiversity, the adaptation of man-made changes to environmental conditions related to the ecologically sustainable use of energy, the use of exotic species, and the ecological role of forests in the landscape. Based upon a wide range of stand types, forest conservation, forest protection, management and utilisation have multiple components from conservation to regeneration and amelioration, (forest preservation mitigating the consequences of past management, sylvo-pastoral management, slash (brash) disposal, stump and whole tree removal, forest restoration, tree mixture regulation, wildlife management, and others) These policy statements are the result of many discussions held among members of the board of PRO SILVA Europe. These are: 1. conservation of ecosystems; 2. protection of soil and climate; 3. production of timber and other products; 4. recreation, amenity, and cultural aspects
