The historical influence of the Treaty of Pereyaslav in 1654 on the further development of Ukraine is analyzed, as well as a historical and legal assessment of the agreements concluded by the Ukrainian hetmans with the tsarist authorities of Russia regarding the accession of Ukraine to the empire is presented from the standpoint of modernity. A historical and legal assessment of the activities of the Cossack elders’ collaborators, who by their actions contributed to the decline of national activity in the areas of strengthening Ukrainian statehood, is presented.
