Abstract

Changes in bone metabolism and bone structure occur in various metabolic conditions. This chapter discusses the histomorphometric findings in osteoporosis, hyperparathyroidism, osteomalacia, acromegaly/growth hormone (GH) deficiency, and hyper/hypothyroidism. Although osteoporosis is characterized by major changes in bone structure, the disturbances of bone remodeling are still debated. However, the histomorphometric indices that describe the mechanisms of bone loss are important in the understanding of the usefulness and limitations of the histomorphometric method. Using osteoporosis as an example, this chapter presents the methodological aspects of bone histomorphometry in more detail.
