Abstract

Observations of serial sections of 56 skulls with a fronto-occipital diameter between 1 and 7.5 cm are reported. Two distinct vascular systems, both originating from the small vessels within the connective tissue surrounding the cartilage of the otic capsule are found to invade the cartilage and show different behavior. 1. Cartilage vessels appearing during the tenth week of development. 2. The vascular system responsible for enchondral bone formation and cartilage breakdown.
