Abstract

An attempt is made to establish a set of normal measurement identification criteria (histologic) for specific gastrointestinal areas in wild ruminants utilizing pronghorn antelope, Antilocapra americana americana, Eleven areas are selected for histologic study. Specific type of measurements obtained included thickness of various cellular layers, villi measurements, and total thickness of the gastrointestinal wall in each selected area. Duodenal glands are invariably larger and present in much larger numbers in domestic ruminants while submucosal fat is found in much larger amounts in the caecum of antelope. Where present shape and size of villi, as well as appearance of mucosal surfaces, provided excellent identification criteria for localizing tissue samples from the gastrointestinal tract of pronghorn antelope.
