Abstract

Purpose: Recent studies have suggested that pancreatobiliary reflux occurs not only in patients with pancreaticobiliary maljunction (PBM), but also in patients without PBM and thereby possibly causes biliary tract disease. In this study, we examined prospectively histological findings and genetic analysis in the noncancerous epithelium of the gallbladder in patients with high biliary amylase levels and a normal pancreaticobiliary junction. Subjects and Methods: Twenty-one patients including nine high biliary amylase levels (HBA) patients with gallbladder diseases for which cholecystectomy was performed, prospectively underwent ERCP to assess confluence of pancreaticobiliary ducts in comparison with biliary amylase levels in the gallbladder in our hospital from October 2002 to November 2003.
