Abstract

Histochemistry can be used to differentiate the steroidogenic cells of the human ovary and indicate the specific hormone produced. The steroid 3β-ol dehydrogenase, which can be demonstrated in the corpus luteum cells, the theca cells, and the hilus cells, seems to differ. The cell specificity of this enzyme may determine the hormone production of the cell. The demonstration of an internal intracellular feedback mechanism, which apparently maintains the cellular homeostasis, makes it necessary to use unphysiologic substrates for the best histochemical results.
