Abstract

1. 1. The effects of exposure to cold on metabolic rate, organ weight and histology were studied in Merriam's kangaroo rat. 2. [2. Exposure to cold for 1 and for 4 weeks caused an increase in oxygen consumption but had no significant effect on body or organ weights. 3. 3. Continuous exposure to a constant cold environment appears to represent an abnormal stress, judging from lesions shown in the liver, heart, kidneys, lungs and testes. 4. 4. It is suggested that the pathological conditions associated with cold acclimation in the white rat are not directly correlated to the hypertrophy of the organs but rather related to the effects of continuous and constant exposure to cold.
