Abstract
Abnormal sexual hair growth may result from excessive production of androgens or factors sensitizing the hair follicle apparatus to normal levels of endogenous androgens. Hirsutism may be encountered in endocrinologic disorders involving adrenals and ovaries, pituitary disorders which stimulate the adrenals or ovaries, and thyroid troubles. The most important laboratory test is the estimation of urinary 17-ketosteroids before and after adrenal suppression.
