Abstract

Occidental Chemical President and Chief Executive Officer J. Roger Hirl has worked hard for the chemical industry over the years. This Wednesday night at the Plaza Hotel in New York City, that hard work will be recognized and honored by presentation to Hirl of the 1997 Chemical Industry Medal from the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI), American Section. SCI, in announcing the award, cited Hirl's leadership, foresight, and many contributions to applied chemistry that have enhanced the progress of the entire industry. SCI noted that Hirl currently is chairman of the board of the Chlorine Chemistry Council and is an appointed member of the Industrial Policy Advisory Committee, jointly administered by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and the Department of Commerce. He is a past chairman of the Chemical Manufacturers Association (CMA), the American Plastics Council, the Chlorine Institute, and the Society of Chemical Industry, American Section.
