Abstract

Female hyperandrogenism is a clinical condition resulting from excessive secretion of androgens from the ovarian or adrenal glands. Clinical and psychological repercussions, coming from dermocosmetic alterations (hirsutism, acne or androgenic alopecia) and ovulatory dysfunction, are variable. Polycystic ovary is the commonest endocrine disorder in premenopausal woman and is the most frequent cause of androgen excess. Well-stablished diagnostic criteria are the basement of its diagnosis, and entail a differential diagnosis with other causes of hyperandrogenism (nonclassic congenital adrenal hyperplasia, thyroid dysfunction, androgenizing drugs and/or tumors). In postmenopausal women, androgen excess can be caused by ovarian hyperthecosis or other benign or malignant tumors. Individualized treatment is focused on clinical symptoms in order to improve both the health and quality of life of these patients.
