Abstract
Some 40 years of planetary boundary-layer research is brieflyreviewed with Riso National Laboratory as the vantage point. Theevolution of descriptions of atmospheric boundary layers –including boundary-layer turbulence, its parameterization, interactions with larger scale phenomena, and engineeringimplications – are discussed; So are the effects of technologicalinnovations that were utilized quickly in some areas anddisappointingly slowly in others. A view of the future isattempted with caution.
