Abstract

The influence of Cs on the corrosion of 316 H stainless steel pipework when exposed to liquid lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE) coolant, specifically LBE containing 0.5 wt% Cs at high temperature, is investigated. The addition of Cs in LBE can significantly accelerate the corrosion of 316 H stainless steel. Cs in LBE first destroys the Cr2O3 film on the surface of the stainless steel and reacts with Cr23C6 enriched at grain boundaries. Finally, the reaction between Cs and FeCr2O4 creates pores in inner oxide layer (IOL), thus destroying the protection provided to 316 H stainless steel by the IOL.
