Abstract

The micro-structures of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu4O8 crystals are studied by high- resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). It is confirmed that no significant difference exists between the crystal structures of Ca- substituted (x=0.1) and Ca-free (x=0) crystals. In both x=0 and x=0.1 materials, there are no twin structures which are observed in YBa2Cu3Oy. There exist some planar defects with the absence of one chain in the double Cu-O chains. In addition, micro-domains where the directions of the c-axis are different each other are observed in some grains of Ca-substituted crystals.
