Abstract

High-resolution neutron instrumentation has a long tradition in Garching: The backscattering and the resonance spin-echo method were developed here. While the old FRM reactor allowed little more than a demonstration of principle, the FRM II, in operation since 2005, has become a leading location for »real« instruments, especially in view of its excellent cold-neutron source. In this article, we will present four high-resolution spectrometers: TOFTOF (time of flight), SPHERES (backscattering), J-NSE (spin echo) and RESEDA (resonance spin-echo). They are all located in the first neutron guide hall of FRM II using an end position of a cold neutron guide [1]. TOFTOF and RESEDA are built and operated by Technische Universität München (TUM, for user access see http://http://user.frm2.tum.de), SPHERES and J-NSE by the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS, http://www.jcns.info).
